Installation & Use

Monitoring & Managing Mail Service

This section covers using the following features to monitor and/or manage mail server activity:

[Advanced]

Mail Server Activity Window

Select "Show Mail Server Activity" from the Server menu of the ASIP Mail Server Admin Program.

This window indicates:

  • Server Status: Not Running, Running, Contacting
  • Mail Storage information: the volume on which the mail database is stored, the size of the file and the number of messages it contains.

The three buttons allow easy access to the AppleShare IP Manager, the Users & Groups List, and the Date and Time control panel, respectively.

Connected Users

Select "Show Connected Users" from the Server menu of the ASIP Mail Server Admin Program.

From this window, you can determine how many users are currently connected, as well as the maximum number of connections allowed, given the current amount of memory allocated to the Mail Server application.

With the default memory partition of 4MB (with VM on), the mail server can accommodate 17 POP and 17 IMAP connections. To increase the maximum number of connections, increase RAM using the Get Info window on the Mail Server application, located in the Extensions folder. Keep in mind, however, that with many simultaneous connections, clients may notice a decrease in server responsiveness.

SMTP Activity

Select "Show SMTP Activity " from the Server menu of the ASIP Mail Server Admin Program.

This window will show you the current SMTP connections. SMTP connections include:

  • Outgoing:
    • The mail server attempting to deliver mail to other mail servers.
    • By default, 2 outgoing connections can occur simultaneously.
  • Incoming:
    • The mail server receiving mail from other mail servers.
    • The mail server receiving mail to deliver, from clients.
    • By default, 4 incoming connections can occur simultaneously.

Hosts Lists

Select "Show Hosts Lists" from the Server menu. This window will indicate how many messages are waiting to be delivered to each host, and the current status.

Mail Server Log/Error Log

Select "Show Mail Server Log" or "Show Error Log" from the Server menu of the ASIP Mail Server Admin Program. Both logs are in the format "Date," "Time", "Event."

The Mail Server Log contains information about different events that occur on the server: server starting, receiving mail, users connecting, errors on DNS lookups, etc.

The error log contains any error message generated by the mail server.

The details contained in the either log are set using the Log tab in Advanced Settings.

Viewing the mail server log and mail error log should be your first step when attempting to troubleshoot problems with the mail server. See the Troubleshooting section for details on the type of information that will appear in the Server and Error logs.
